This work is an interactive media art piece created by Oyama as his undergraduate graduation project, following his years of practice in photographic expression during his studies. This exhibition is grounded in his sense that contemporary digital photographs viewed on monitors lack the emotional presence inherent in photographs materially fixed onto physical surfaces. In response, the project experimentally proposes a new mode of spectatorship to challenge the often one-directional and self-contained viewing structure of digital photography. The three photographs projected onto the screen gradually deteriorate and become coarse when no viewer is present, or when the viewer’s eyes are closed. Conversely, when a person stands before the image and their gaze is detected, the photographs subtly regain clarity. Rather than focusing on the photographic image itself or on the process of production, the work addresses the structure of display and existence specific to digital photography. Through this approach, it seeks to reconsider and update the condition of digital photography as a medium that has long been treated as static and self-contained.
